LOOK AGAIN: A NEW VISION

“Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new things now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:18-19)

Our Second family came together at the beginning of May to share an important conversation about the life and work of our church as we look to our future together.  Over the coming months, we will be hearing and sharing more about what is taking shape in our congregational community as we give focused attention to the challenges and opportunities we are encountering.

At our core, I believe the future for Second Baptist is being shaped by this vision for ministry.  I believe this is what God is leading us to embrace:

SECOND BAPTIST CHURCH IS A CENTER OF CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY

God continues to show us and remind us that more people come TO our church Monday thru Saturday than FOR church on Sunday. God is showing us that the harvest is plentiful and we have opportunities at our doorstep – quite literally!

Therefore, I believe God is calling us to be and become more than just a church for members but a center of Christian community for a wider audience.  What we do and who we are needs should be seen through the lens of our entire Second Community.

With that in mind, in our congregational meeting we talked about four primary areas of focus for our church:

FOCUS ONE: SPIRITUAL FORMATION / MAKING DISCIPLES

We’re not looking to make church members, we’re more interested in making disciples of Jesus.

FOCUS TWO: INTERGENERATIONAL MINISTRY

We’re not looking for ways simply to attract young people, we’re looking to equip people of all ages with a faith that endures.

FOCUS THREE: TELLING OUR STORY

We’re not looking to tell people about the goodness of Second Baptist, we’re looking at how Second Baptist gets to share God’s goodness with others.

FOCUS FOUR: HOSPITALITY

We’re not looking for outreach gimmicks to meet people, we’re looking at how to be generous with people where we find them and offer God’s grace and goodness to them.

We have much more to discern and discover together as we pursue God’s direction in these areas.  This is an exciting season of our life together and I am eager for us to go where God leads!

Grace and peace,

Stephen
