The John N. Avis Memorial Scholarship honors the legacy of career Memphis educator John N. Avis, dedicated member of Second Baptist Church and first Head of School at Collegiate School of Memphis.
Who was John N. Avis?
John spent his career investing in the lives of children through teaching, coaching and mentoring. His career spanned 30 years, serving Memphis City Schools for decades before retiring and directing his educational leadership to the private school sector and teaching as an adjunct professor at Memphis State University, Christian Brothers University, and Memphis College of Art.
Beyond the classroom, John was committed to the Memphis community. He volunteered as a Sunday school teacher and served on numerous committees at Second Baptist Church. He also served on the board of Brinkley Heights Urban Academy, a school dedicated to providing a safe educational environment for vulnerable children in an underserved neighborhood.
Applicants
Eligible applicants must be graduating seniors from Collegiate School of Memphis (CSM) with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Scholars with a GPA between 2.8–2.9 may be considered with evidence of academic growth and a letter of recommendation from a CSM teacher or administrator.
Applicants must have also volunteered at the Second Baptist Pumpkin Patch while a student at CSM. Preference will be given to scholars who have volunteered multiple times over multiple years in the pumpkin patch.
Applicants must submit two short reflections honoring the legacy of John N. Avis. The first reflection is on a teacher who has been a positive influence on their lives. The second reflection is on what the scholar has learned or gained by volunteering and serving others.
Applicants must be accepted to and planning to enroll in an accredited two-year college, four-year college, or vocational/trade school, and must provide proof of enrollment prior to the release of funds. Preference will be given to first generation college students pursuing higher education in Shelby County.
Scholarship Details
Applications will be available between November 15 – March 15.
Applications will be reviewed and recipients notified by members of Second Baptist Church.
Scholarship is to be applied toward the upcoming academic year.
Funds will be sent directly to the scholar’s institution. Applicants will need to submit proof of enrollment before funds are released.
Previous recipients are welcome to reapply, but priority will be given to first-time applicants. A different process for those applications will be utilized as those students will no longer be enrolled at Collegiate School of Memphis.
