Second’s Staff
Ministerial Staff
Dr. Stephen Cook, Senior Pastor
Stephen graduated from Wake Forest University (Bachelor of Arts in Religion), Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond (Master of Divinity), Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University (Master of Theology in Pastoral Theology and Counseling), and Columbia Theological Seminary (Doctor of Ministry). He has served churches in North Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia prior to coming to Second in November 2010. He and his wife, Amy, have two children, Benjamin and Jonathan. Stephen’s interests include road trips with his family (visiting all 50 states is on his bucket list), cheering for the hometown Grizzlies, and running enough miles per day to stay moderately healthy.
Mr. Larry Denman, Associate Minister: Music and Worship
Larry began his ministry at Second Baptist in February 2017. His formal education includes a Bachelor of Arts in music from Millsaps College (2009), studying music theory at the University of Southern Mississippi (2010-2012), and a Master of Music in choral conducting from the University of Memphis (2016). Larry has conducted and taught adults in church and community choirs and has an equal amount of experience working with youth and children’s choirs. Additionally, he has experience leading handbell ensembles and church orchestras while also being a proficient instrumentalist and soloist. Larry and his wife, Catherine, are the parents of a daughter, Adelaide.
Rev. Daniel Johnson, Associate Pastor
Daniel began his ministry with Second Baptist in January 2012 after serving churches in Missouri, Georgia and Virginia. Daniel’s wife, Mekea, teaches at Richland Elementary School and they have two daughters, Olivia and Audrey. After working for over fifteen years with students, Daniel now focuses his attention on providing opportunities for the congregation to deepen their relationship with Christ and with one another. This includes overseeing mission experiences that are more than simple acts of service but are invitations to spiritual transformation as some spiritual growth can only happen in the disordered world beyond the walls of the church. Daniel also manages the annual Second Baptist Pumpkin Patch. Outside of church, Daniel enjoys cooking, talking sports (Yankees or Cardinals baseball especially), classic soul music and spending time with his three girls, his most important ministry.
